The Design Process
A Design Brief is based on individual requirements, personal taste, budget allowance and timescale. When designing a garden there are many issues to take into account, the most important being, who is the design catering for, and what are the clients needs?
Advisory Visit - General Assessment & Survey offers the chance to consider the practicalities of transforming ideas into reality and discuss some suggestions put forward. At this stage clients decide whether to go for a consultation. This involves the designer basically measuring out the plot of land and creating a rough sketch, also taking photographs of the house and garden, to aid in the design process. An appointment is then arranged with the clients for an approximate two hour consultation.
Consultation is a two way process whereby clients and designer discuss in detail the following criteria.
Style Cottage Garden, Mediterranean Look, Contemporary, Japanese theme, Outdoor Rooms
Design Structures Property boundaries - walls, fences, pathways, terraces, pergolas, arbours etc.
House The design and materials used must reflect the period of the property to a certain extent
Access Important to consider with regards delivery of materials and in some cases a digger
Position Size and shape of plot, flat or sloping, North- South facing, detached, outlook, eyesores
Usage How will the time be spent in the garden and for what purpose is it intended
Occupants Who are you accommodating for in the garden? Children - Pets - Elderly
Patio - Decking Extension of your home accommodating your outdoor living space
Seating Types, pit stops around the garden - freestanding or fitted as an integral part of the design
Alfresco Outside kitchen, cooking and dining area where you can entertain family and friends
Lighting To illuminate pathways, steps, patios, but also for effect to show off plants and features
Plants Ornamental trees, shrubs, architectural plants add all year interest & colour to the garden
Ground Plan & Work Shedule is usually the next stage of the process if clients want to go ahead with a Garden Makeover, some however are happy to work with sketches, proposals & recomendations with a much looser design brief and requirements.
